Regional Catchment Strategy

A primary role of a Catchment Management Authority is the preparation of a regional catchment strategy and the coordinatinon and monitoring of its implementation. The Port Phillip and Western Port Regional Catchment Strategy, 2004-2009 (RCS), is the document for our region.

The RCS is an important planning and working document for those involved in natural resource management in the region including; government agencies, councils, water authorities and community groups.  It describes the natural assets of the region, the major threats to those assets and actions to improve on asset condition.

The RCS focuses on land, water and biodiversity assets  including coastal and marine areas. It provides a framework for effort, an investment guide, a means of integrating policy and an action plan for catchment works.

It allocates tasks – defining roles for many stakeholders in the delivery of environmental programs across the region. It is also a regional investment guide, informing the allocation of Victorian and Australian Government investment in natural resource management in the region.

The current Port Phillip and Western ort Regional Catchment Strategy was accredited by the Victorian and Australian Governments in December 2004. A new strategy is being developed for the period 2010-2015.
