To coincide with the 15 year anniversary of Coastcare and almost 20 years of Landcare on the Peninsula the Port Phillip and Westernport CMA, the Department of Sustainability Environment and the Mornington Peninsula Shire will be hosting an event to celebrate the contribution volunteer Landcare and Coastcare groups make to preserving and maintaining the natural environment on the Mornington Peninsula.
Local volunteers have put numerous environmental projects into action. These projects range from revegetation activities, pest plant and animal control programs, flora and fauna surveys and native seed collection and propagation to creating access path and interpretive signage to help the community make the most of the natural environment.
The PPWCMA’s Mornington Peninsula CatchmentCare Coordinator, Kacie Melfi, says the contribution of these volunteer groups is vital in maintaining healthy natural ecosystem on the Peninsula.
“The efforts of local volunteer environmental groups play a big part in maintain the Mornington Peninsula’s picturesque natural environment. From the beaches of Point Nepean through to the slopes of Red Hill and down to the mangroves of Westernport volunteers have been working hard to protect and conserve the Peninsula’s natural assets. These efforts deserve recognition and our thanks.”
The celebration is open to all Landcare and coastal volunteers and will include presentations acknowledging the efforts of these volunteer groups from the PPWCMA’s Mornington Peninsula CatchmentCare Coordinator and DSE’s Coast Action/Coastcare Facilitator as well as information from the Shire regarding their vegetation mapping that will help groups plan future activities. There will also be plenty of delicious food supplied by a local caterer.
