Manningham Council takes honours at Awards

The 2008 Port Phillip and Western Port Landcare Awards were held on Saturday 6 September at Zinc in Federation Square and the 11 winners announced in front of 250 guests. The Awards celebrate Landcare Week’s Landcare Heroes and focus on the thousands of volunteers making a difference by tackling some of the big issues in Melbourne’s landscape and catchment environments.

Progressive local government Manningham City Council was awarded the Local Government Caring for Land category and recognised for their contribution to the community. Manningham City Council has delivered a range of innovative support and awareness programs in partnership with local Landcare Groups, Melbourne Water, EPA and Waterwatch.

The Council has coordinated groups to deliver rabbit control programs across 2,200 properties, including n public land. It provides a diverse range of incentive programs to landholders to protect, manage and improve the environmental values of their land.

They have developed a strategic approach to formation of new Landcare groups and aim to have a Landcare Group working in each of the four creek catchments in the Green Wedge zone. They have engaged local businesses in a business sustainability and a behaviour change program to lessen business’ environmental impact.

Melton Shire Council also gained recognition as a commended nominee in the category. Melton Shire has done significant environmental asset mapping, undertakes a range of environmental education programs, actively supports local Friends of and Landcare Groups, has developed support media materials and provides incentives for landholders. The Shire’s environmental commitment is recognised with a commendation.

All winners of the Port Phillip and Western Port Landcare Awards will go on to be nominated for the 2009 Victorian Landcare Awards.
