The Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority (PPWCMA), in conjunction with the Moorabool Landcare Network and with support from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Programme, is giving landholders the opportunity to undertake a Farm Chemical Users Training course. This course will enable farmers to obtain an Agricultural Chemical Users Permit (ACUP) that will facilitate control of rabbits and weeds on their property. With a hot, dry summer ahead of us, conditions are perfect for rabbits to do severe damage to native vegetation and revegetation works. Rabbit control is best undertaken at the end of the dry period, between February and April and this training course will enable attendees to obtain an ACUP in time to best address the pests. Weed control is also critically important at this time of year. During droughts, when stock prices typically drop, there is a tendency for many landholders to retain too many stock for the condition of their properties. This can place great grazing pressure on pastures and may result in bare ground and an invasion of weeds. Landholders who are already members of a Landcare group will have the opportunity to undertake the course free of charge. Landholders interested in attending the course and who are not currently members of a Landcare group also have the opportunity to complete the training free of charge by joining a local Landcare group. A fee of $100 will be charged for attendees who are not currently Landcare members and do not wish to join a Landcare group. Please contact Roger MacRaild on 0459 622 588 for details of how to join your local Landcare group or visit http://www.mln.org.au/landcare-groups.
