Protecting Victoria’s Ramsar Wetlands

25 October 2019

The Port Phillip & Westernport CMA’s Ramsar Protection Program Coordinator, Andrew Morrison, recently attended a statewide Ramsar site coordinators meeting in Bairnsdale.

Hosted by East Gippsland CMA, the meeting was a great opportunity to share knowledge and hear about all the terrific work that catchment management authorities, DELWP, Melbourne Water, and their partners are delivering to protect and enhance internationally significant wetlands across Victoria.

Coordinators discussed a range of topics inlcuding Indigenous participation and engagement, seasonal conditions, program successes and challenges, future directions and improving Ramsar site management plans.

Andrew said that a highlight of the meeting was visiting the Macleod Morass Wildlife Reserve and touring the Gippsland Lakes system.

“We observed Bar-tailed Godwits, Hooded plovers, White-bellied Sea-eagles, Eurasian coots and Australian shelducks amongst others … a big thank you to Sean Phillipson from East Gippsland CMA for taking great care of us.”
