Accounting for Nature

Accounting for natural capital on your farm

The Port Phillip & Westernport CMA, in partnership with Landcare Australia, is undertaking a six month pilot project trialling the Level 3 Accounting for Nature and Landcare methods.

Accounting for Nature is a series of accredited assessment methods to measure the condition of environmental assets (such as native vegetation and soils) on farms at a property scale. They are designed to ensure the integrity and transparency of environmental accounts.

A Level 3 entry into the Accounting for Nature methods can assist farmers go on to develop Level 1 accounts which may in future be registered under carbon and biodiversity stewardship payment schemes. It is also an opportunity for farms to demonstrate evidence-based eco-credentials and attract supply chain premiums.

Small group farm walks

The project is supporting a number of farming and Landcare groups in the region to host small group farm walks focused on Account for Nature methods.

At the walks, participants can start to collate their reference benchmarking data and see a demonstration on collecting the field measurements and photo points for measuring current condition of the area chosen for assessment.

Upcoming small group farm walks:

  • Mornington Peninsula – Friday 23rd April, 10am-12:30pm
  • Bass Coast Landcare – Friday 18th June (time TBC)

If you would like more information on these events, or your Landcare group is interested in hosting a small group farm walk that demonstrates the native vegetation method, please email karen.thomas@ppwcma.vic.gov.au.
