Working with the community to protect French Island

9 March 2021

The Port Phillip & Westernport CMA has been working with Parks Victoria, French Island Landcare and Zoos Victoria for many years to protect French Island’s unique fauna from feral cats.

French Island is a very special place – it’s surrounded by the internationally-significant Western Port Ramsar site and hundred of bird and small animal species call it home.

We’re pleased to be taking the next step to eradicate feral cats from the island completely and create a safe-haven for French Island’s wildlife that is free of introduced predators.

A community information day was held on French Island recently so residents could have a chat with the Feral Cat Free French Island project team and learn more about what is planned.

Lots of questions were answered and some equipment and tools that are being used throughout the project were on display. A lovely BBQ lunch was supplied, with tasty sandwiches and cakes made by local French Island businesses – thank you!

It was great to chat to so many interested island residents and we look forward to holding a similar event in the future, and working with the community on this important project.
